Riyadh Season 2022 visitors are looking forward to the launch of the play “The Philosopher” on Thursday, November 17. The play will be held on the stage of Studio 1 in Boulevard Riyadh City, one of the 15 entertainment zones of the season. It tells the biography of the footballer Yousuf Al-Thunayan in the history of Saudi football, with integrated audiovisual presentations that convey sports details about him.
“The Philosopher” constitutes a shining chapter in the history of Saudi football. It displays the inspiring stations that Al-Thunayan documented in his career, and the scenes of the play recall his successes, including his international achievement when he contributed to the qualification of the Saudi national team to the World Cup in 1998 in France, and other achievements until his retirement in mid-2004.
The play narrates the beginnings of Al-Thunayan in 1975 when he started by playing football in his neighborhood up until he joined Al-Hilal Club, in which he attained historical achievements.
The play presents dramatic scenes accompanied by professional sound effects that embody the meaning of the sportsmanship qualities that Al-Thunayan had to achieve that many achievements. “The Philosopher” goes through the 1980s, which marked a milestone in his football career.

“The Philosopher”, written by Faisal Al-Amer and directed by Aqil Al-Khamisi, reviews the details of Yousuf Al-Thunayan’s career and its stages until his retirement at the beginning of the millennium. It shows how he succeeded in winning great popularity until he became one of the stars of Saudi football.
The play brings back nostalgia and beautiful memories by presenting news clippings of the most prominent football events and achievements in the 1990s. It is the first Saudi play to introduce the concept of biographies, which is one of the concepts of international theater that is inspired by writing about the lives of famous personalities.
Al-Thunayan achieved 28 championships throughout his career, 3 of them with the Saudi national team, and 25 championships with his club Al-Hilal. He is one of the players who achieved the most with his club. He also won many awards, the most important of which was the award for the best Asian player in the 1986 Asian Club Championship.
